TONIGHT's Topic: "Fulfilling The Law!"

As we have noted in past sessions, the Mosaic law touched virtually every part of Jewish Life, including childbirth, and that Jesus was Mary And Joseph's first-born son added another layer of complexity. We also noted a couple of weeks ago that Joseph is described as being a "righteous man" in Matthew 1:19. This doesn't mean that he was perfect, but that he consciously and actively tried to obey the Mosaic law, so leading his family in performing what was necessary for his wife and son would have come naturally. It also meant that their stay in Bethlehem had to be extended for another six weeks, so they wouldn't sleep in their own bed for quite a while, and wouldn't consummate their marriage until they got back home.

The Law of Moses required that a male child be circumcised on the eighth day, so Mary and Joseph left Bethlehem and traveled the few miles to Jerusalem for this purpose. In fact, Luke mentions three ceremonies that were conducted in accordance with the custom of that time: Circumcision for the baby, the purification of his mother, and the baby’s dedication to the Lord as their firstborn male child. While it is important to the larger narrative that these ceremonies were completed properly, the real story here is that of Simeon and Anna.
