TONIGHT's Topic: "Suicide - 25 Years Later!"

Suicide - 25 Years Later

It has been twenty-five years since Connie put SUICIDE on my "radar" - October 22, 1997 - by taking her own life on that fateful day, and in some ways, it hasn't gotten easier.

I was reminded - again, of the devastation that is left behind when someone commits suicide. I lost a young friend (29) and brother to suicide, October 12, 2017.

We buried him the day before the 20th anniversary of Connie's death. Connie left behind our family which will never be "whole" again. Her death, rather than unifying our family, blew our family apart. He left his young, pregnant wife and three young children behind. His baby boy, Little Wil, will never know his father and what a great man he was.

As a suicide survivor, and knowing other suicide survivors, I am appalled by how many people take their own lives every year. One of the problems is suicide is that it doesn't just affect the person who took their own life, but it also affects their family and friends.

Sometimes there are also long-term ramifications, particularly when there was already turmoil in the relationships. Sadly, I am still, after twenty-five years, plagued with family strife and my kids refusal to have anything to do with me. That makes it even more difficult for me to have closure and move past what happened.

How has suicide affected you and your relationships?
