TONIGHT's Topic: "Daniel's Prayer For His People"
Timeless Lesson
Actions have consequences, both for good and for ill, and Israel's repeated rebellion against God had brought calamity on them, as Judea and Jerusalem had been conquered and sacked by the Babylonians, which included the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. Daniel and his three friends had been taken captive and relocated to Babylon, where they entered the king's service. Service in a foreign government wasn't always easy, and they faced many temptations to abandon their trust in God, but He had seen them through whatever was thrown at them. In some cases, God rewarded their faithfulness with even greater responsibilities and honor.
After recounting life as servants of the king in the first six chapters, Daniel starts having visions, and hard on the heels of his second vision, Daniel is moved to intercede for his people.
This chapter recounts the prophecy of the seventy weeks, probably the most debated portion of the whole prophecy. The chapter has four divisions: (1) Daniel comes to understand that the "seventy years" of Israel's captivity are about to end (Daniel 9:1-2); (2) his fervent prayer that God will indeed bless and restore Israel to Palestine (Daniel 9:3-19); (3) Gabriel interrupts his prayer in order to show Daniel things to come (Daniel 9:10-23); and (4) the prophecy of the seventy weeks (Daniel 9:24-27).
We are going to split this chapter into two sessions, and only focus on Daniel's prayer and the lessons we can glean from Daniel up to this point. We will focus in the prophesy in the latter part of the chapter next week.
Tune in TONIGHT for "Healing Through Faith" session with Veteran Steve McFarland.
