TONIGHT's Topic: "No Easy Answers!"

Suicide just struck too close to home - again. I wish I could say that suicide is very rare, but unfortunately another family suffers a suicide every twelve minutes, seven days a week. A quarter of those are either Veterans or First Responders. Veterans and First Responders make up a disproportional percentage of those who take their own lives.

People…loved-ones…take their own lives every day. Suicide has become a tragic epidemic, with no end in sight. Suicide statistics are grim, but they aren't just numbers. These are real people, not just numbers. In more tangible terms:

  • Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US.

  • We lose a community every day. I live in a community which probably doesn't even have 121 people in it, so it would be wiped out, and then some.

  • We lose a small town every week. There are many small towns that don't even have 850 residents. They would be a total-loss.

  • We lose 3,400 people to suicide every month, which is the equivalent of a modest-size town.

  • Our annual losses to suicide would populate a small city (44,000).

I, too, am a suicide survivor. My story is told here also. The common thread that runs through every story…every experience…is WHY? Why did your loved-one…my wife…commit suicide. There are no easy answers…

I wish I could provide answers to everyone who has lost a loved-one to suicide, but I can’t, because the answers aren’t easy. I wish I could make everyone’s pain go away, but I can’t even make my own go away. In some ways, my pain is as fresh as it was the day my wife took her life. I am still living with the fallout of what she did. Twenty-four years later, my kids still will have nothing to do with me.
