I really need to thank the military for teaching me the concept of stepping up. Going back to my Vietnam days, you may be assigned as #3 in a 3 ship B-52 cell because your crew is new in theater. However due to maintenance and other things, find yourself as lead on a bombing mission. The key is to train yourselves to always be ready to step up because you never know when it may happen.
